Cambodia Summary

On your Awesome Experience to Cambodia, you’ll head off-the-beaten track to get a real feel for life in this beautiful country. Travel by bike, ox-cart and army Jeep with your private guide to ensure you access all areas – from intricately-decorated temples to tranquil modern villages and ruins lost in forest. The undoubted highlight is a helicopter ride high above Angkor Wat, during which you’ll grasp the miraculous scale of the ancient Khmer city. Beyond the city, the villages around Battambang and Tonle Sap offer the chance to embrace the peaceful pace of rural Cambodian life.

After seeing the country’s sights, it’s time to relax on the blissful castaway island of Koh Rong. This stunning, white sand-fringed dollop has only recently made it onto the holiday map: By day, untouched sands such as Sok San, Coconut Beach and Lonely Beach are ripe for exploration. By night, the sea is filled with bioluminescent plankton and candlelit restaurants on the sand vend fresh fish and Cambodian classics. All our hotels on Koh Rong are set on stunning stretches of sand, offering friendly service, comfortable rooms and excellent restaurants right on the beach. We’ve left the time on Koh Rong free of organised activities, so that your last few days in Cambodia can be as relaxed or as active as you want them to be.

Koh Rong

Until 2008 Koh Rong was an undiscovered paradise with only a few families living on the island. Tourism began slowly, with guesthouses and small resorts popping up one by one along the coast, though mostly in Koh Tuich which is where you’ll disembark on arrival. The majority of the inner island is still jungle-clad and undeveloped and these areas are well worth exploring. By day, the sugary-white sand and crystal clear waters are an enchanting place to unwind, particularly Sok San, Coconut Beach and Lonely Beach which are away from the main tourist areas. By night, the sea is filled with bioluminescent plankton and fire-dancers perform on the beach late into the evening, making for an unforgettable experience.

We provide hotels in a stunning location with breakfast included and private transport from mainland Cambodia directly to your hotel. The perfect way to rest and recuperate before you head back home, this 4 day trip has no organised activities, meaning that your time on this beautiful island can be as relaxed or as active as you want it to be.

Day Two: Insider’s Cambodia

Get to know Phnom Penh City on a speedy foray by tuk-tuk. You’ll stop off at the Royal Palace (built in 1866 and home to treasures that include a 90-kilo solid gold buddha, encrusted with 9,584 diamonds). Then, you’ll visit a very different landmark, as you take in Tuol Seng, the school that turned torture centre under the horrific Khmer Rouge regime. It’s now a moving museum paying respects to the victims. You’ll follow this with a visit to the infamous Killing Fields, where more than a million people lost their lives during the genocide. Pay your respects, before returning to the city centre. This evening, you’ll get the chance to try traditional Cambodian music or dance during a workshop. Following a short intro from the teacher, you’ll learn gestures, styles and techniques of the craft and try on beautiful costumes: take home a photo as a souvenir. Then, during early evening, the warm and knowledgeable Chef Nara will whisk you off on a journey of street food discovery, tasting some of Phnom Penh’s most unusual dishes.

Day Three: Journey to Battambang

It’s a long drive (5.5 hours) through rice fields and villages of wooden houses en route to the sleepy town of Battambang. Break the journey in the fishing port of Kampong Chhnang, a town on the banks of the vast Tonle Sap lake that’s renowned for its pottery and floating village. You’ll arrive in Battambang in the early afternoon – in time to set off by tuk tuk on a trip past crumbling colonial riverside houses on your way to the 11th-century temple of Wat Ek Phnom. Please note that the hotels and attractions in Battambang are rural and unsophisticated in character, which we feel adds to their charm.

Day Four: Tonle Sap and Villages

Life is slow in the leafy villages around Battambang, as you’ll find out on a cycling trip which follows a small stream past rice paddies, and wooden houses and workshops. On the way, you’ll see villagers making knives, preparing prahok (traditional fish paste) and cooking sticky rice as children run alongside your bike, shouting their hellos. Arriving in a local house, you’ll enjoy a home-cooked lunch before making the three-hour drive to Siem Reap, heading north of Tonle Sap and through the peaceful town of Sisophon, topped with intricate pagodas and bright market stalls. You’ll stop off to watch stonemasons using traditional techniques passed down from the age of Cambodia’s great temples, arriving in Siem Reap in the afternoon. The evening is free to explore this charming city, where wide streets harbour cosmopolitan cafes, boutiques and spas, and where the pretty river is punctuated by pagodas.

Day Five: Angkor Wat and Temples

Most people come to Siem Reap to visit the vast 12th-century temple complex around Angkor – this morning you’ll get the ultimate overview as you fly above it by helicopter, heading towards Tonle Sap and the floating village of Chong Kneas. Back on the ground, you and your guide will make for its most famous temple, Angkor Wat, swathed in exquisite carvings. Then you’ll travel by traditional ox cart to a secret temple far away from the tourist crowds, for a picnic lunch. Post meal, a foot massage will soothe temple-hopping feet. Your final visit of the day is to the jungle-covered Ta Prohm, which once had a starring role in Tomb Raider. This evening, enjoy an action-packed, circus-style performance courtesy of Phare Ponleu Selpak, an NGO founded to give artistic training to poor young Cambodians.

Day Six: Siem Reap by Jeep

Prepare for adventure, as you traverse Siem Reap’s surrounds by American army Jeep. First stop is the romantic sandstone temple of Banteay Srei, surrounded by a moat and covered in stunning carvings. Next, you’ll travel to the villages at Siem Reap’s very edges, to experience everyday life here: start by helping to make rice noodles for your breakfast in one village, then travel to the next (renowned for its coconuts and sticky rice) to assist with the food prep while filling up on local snacks. Lastly, you’ll stop at the house of a family who makes a living from palm leaf handicrafts, and they’ll help you to make your own as a souvenir. Round off the morning with an authentic lunch at a nearby family home. In the afternoon, you’ll have time to explore more of Angkor’s temples, as your guide leads you to the surreal Bayon Temple, covered in serenely smiling faces. You’ll continue on to the huge, 11th-century Baphuon temple mountain and the intricately carved Terrace of the Leper King. On the final evening of your trip, you’ll travel through the countryside to Villa Chandara, a little known private house that serves delicious dinners by candlelight, surrounded by lily ponds and paddy fields. After a pre-dinner cocktail, you’ll be served an unforgettable feast as you savour your surroundings.
