  • Chase the Northern Lights driving a personal Arctic Truck
  • Sail across Reykjanes Peninsula in search of whales, orcas & dolphins

  • Try snowmobiling and Ice caving in the Icelandic wilderness (option)

Iceland1

Touch down in Reykjavik and get yourself acquainted with this colourful, quirky city. You’ll have some time to explore before your first evening’s adventure hunting the Northern Lights. Your specially modified Arctic Truck* can access places tour buses can’t reach, and your guides know the best locations for spotting the elusive Aurora Borealis. The following day, it’s time for a tour of the Golden Circle – but this is no normal tour: you’ll have the power of the Arctic Truck in your hand as you follow tough mountains roads towards the area’s highlights. Next, it’s time for Whale Watching in the low-lying winter sun, finishing up with a soak in the Blue Lagoon.

*Arctic Trucks specialises in modifying 4WD vehicles for use in rough environments; in the mountains, on glaciers or in the desert. In Iceland, their tours are designed for you to drive these specialised super trucks. Not many people have had the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a powerful 4x4 in one of the world’s most unique places, but on this trip you’ll have that opportunity, making it possible to explore the remote areas of Iceland that others rarely get to see.

Itinerary

Iceland

Day One: Arrive in Iceland

You’ll arrive in Iceland by lunchtime, giving yourself time to explore the city at your leisure. Why not wander the pretty harbourside, or check out Hallgrímskirkja – the tallest church in the country – designed to reflect the mountains and glaciers of the Icelandic landscape. Grab an early dinner in town, because you’ll be picked up at 8pm for your private Northern Lights tour. Your guide will drive you to an isolated area outside Reykjavik, free from light pollution and tour buses. You’ll make a few different stops for the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis dance through the sky, before returning to your hotel around 1am. (If you’re unsuccessful in seeing the Northern Lights, you’ll have another chance on the evening of Day 3).

Day Two: Golden Circle with a twist

After breakfast, you’ll be picked up by your guide for an adventure to Iceland’s greatest sights. Today you’ll sit behind the wheel of a powerful Arctic Truck on a privately-guided self-drive tour (if you don’t fancy driving or want to take a look at the scenery, your guide will be more than happy to drive for you). First, you’ll visit Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO Heritage Site that was home of the Icelandic Viking Government from 930 AD to 1798. You’ll follow a mountain road with views over lava fields and Iceland’s second biggest glacier – Langjökull – before stopping off to watch the Strokkur Geyser magnificently spout boiling water to a height of 35 metres. Next, you’ll head up to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall with its multi-step cascade. Depending on weather conditions, your guide will take you on some off road tracks so you can really appreciate the power of the Arctic Truck as you tackle some detours on the way to your next destination, Langjökull glacier. We can arrange an optional snowmobiling tour and ice caving experience here as well (see the Extras tab for details). Back in Reykjavik by late afternoon, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy dinner at one of the city’s great restaurants.

Day Three: Whale watching and Icelandic history

Today you’ll make your way to Reykjavik’s old marina (location weather dependent) for some winter whale watching. This is a unique experience under a low-lying sun which casts a warm glow over the water and snow-capped mountains, and of ten paints the sky bright orange or pink. Iceland’s waters harbour tasty prey for Humpback Whales, Orcas, White-Beaked Dolphins and Harbour Porpoises, all of which you might spot on this adventure. After breaking for lunch, you’ll take an afternoon city tour with an English-speaking Icelandic local. There’s so much to learn about this fascinating country; your guide will teach you about history of Iceland, the evolution of Reykjavik and the Vikings, as well as telling you some folklore about Iceland’s most well-loved creatures: elves. This evening, there’ll be another chance to see the Northern Lights if you missed them on your first night. If you were lucky enough to spot them on first go, enjoy a free evening to take in some more of Reykjavik.
