Summary

Tanzania

Prepare to watch one of the world’s most dramatic sights unfold, as more than 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebra and antelope, stampede across the vast plains of the Serengeti. AWESOME ELEMENTS INCLUDED IN THE TOUR PRICE:

  • Witness vast herds of migrating wildebeest sweeping across the Serengeti or the equally spectacular Ndutu region
  • Spot the Big Five in Ngorongoro Crater – one of the best places in Africa to see them
  • Seek out the famous tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara National Park
  • Savour camp life as you tour Tanzania’s excellent safari lodges
Tanzania Migration Safari - Wildebeest and Zebra

Your adventure begins at Lake Manyara, one of Tanzania’s smaller and less well known parks. The diverse ecosystems of this pint-sized park support an astonishing wealth of wildlife, including huge herds of elephants and rare tree-climbing lions. Next you’ll head to the Serengeti, or Ndutu if you travel between December and April, for a two-night stay close to the migration route. The sight of thousands of stampeding animals is jaw-dropping, but so is the setting: the Serengeti was one of the world’s first UNESCO Heritage Sites, and its flamingo-filled lakes, shimmering orange sunsets and prowling big cats are the epitome of wild Africa.

You’ll combine a day tracking the migration with game drives in search of wildlife including lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas, before moving onwards to the stunning surrounds of the Ngorongoro Crater. This lush, fertile landscape was created three million years ago by a volcanic eruption that tore the land apart, and it’s one of the very best places in Africa to see the Big Five. This is an unforgettable finale to your time in Tanzania, as you head out into the crater in search of rhinos, lions, cheetahs and hippos.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro airport, you’ll be met and transferred to Arusha, the lively town that’s the gateway to Tanzania’s top safari spots. The rest of the day is yours to relax: perhaps you’ll eat at one of its great restaurants, haggle for souvenirs among the Technicolour stalls of the Maasai Market, or simply take in the incredible views of Mount Meru (the country’s second highest peak) rising above the town.

Spend the afternoon on your first Tanzanian game drive here, seeking out 100 different bird species, as well as giraffe, impala, zebra, hippo and the park’s famous tree-climbing lions. Huge herds of elephant trundle past the vehicles, and there’s a hippo pool thronged with large, muddy residents. Spend the night in the national park, before moving onwards tomorrow.

Make for your home for the next two nights: either the Serengeti, a protected area that’s home to the oldest ecosystem in the world or, if you travel between December and March, the sweeping grasslands of Ndutu, where the Serengeti meets the Ngorongoro Crater. Your base has been chosen as the very best place to see the wildebeest migration up close, but first you’ll set off on a game drive across the sprawling flat landscape, seeking out lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena. Savour dinner and a night’s sleep under the huge, star-packed African sky.

Race through the countryside on the hunt for wildebeest and watch as they trail in a great mass on their migration. You’ll need plenty of space on your camera to capture this once in a lifetime sight.

Formed three million years ago by a volcanic explosion, its lush, fertile landscape is a haven for many types of wildlife – rhino, prides of lion and cheetah are regularly spotted.
