Luangwa1

Less visited than its more touristy African neighbours, Zambia is a wildlife watchers’ paradise – with added epic scenery. Couple animal spotting with time in luxe treehouses near Victoria Falls for a truly unique holiday. You’ll start in the untouched landscapes of South Luangwa National Park: lesser-visited than many of its African counterparts, it’s a true wilderness and a fantastic place to spot leopard, lion, elephant and myriad other species.

Safari in Zambia

Check in to perfectly-placed Mfuwe Lodge and enjoy game drives in your own private vehicle with private tracker, as well as an unforgettable walking safari in the place where they were first pioneered. Your time in South Luangwa contrasts perfectly with a few days in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, home to the dramatic Victoria Falls or ‘Smoke That Thunders’. Here, with a romantic treehouse as your base, you’ll get up-close to the Falls, traverse the rapids of the mighty Zambezi river and spot the local wildlife by foot and 4X4.

Day One: Into the wilderness

Upon arrival in Lusaka, you’ll transfer onto another plane to Mfuwe, gateway to the untouched landscapes of South Luangwa National Park. You’ll spend three nights in this incredible wilderness, home to 40 mammal species and more than 400 types of bird. Expect to see lions, leopards and elephants, as well as encountering smaller but no less impressive residents, including bush babies and mongoose.

Your base is Mfuwe Lodge, an award-winning hotel which avoids any pre-game drive traffic jams with a setting just inside the gates of the National Park . Eighteen spacious, air-conditioned chalets are spread across the banks of two lagoons busy with the local wildlife (including giraffe, hippo, antelope and crocodile). Visit in November, and you’ll also see elephants wandering through reception on their way to snack at a nearby mango tree. Between safaris, take a dip in the pretty pool, burn off some of the excellent food in the outdoor gym, or indulge in some deep relaxation in the Bush Spa, set out onto the lagoon.

Day Three: Feet first

As an unspoilt wilderness, South Luangwa is one of the world’s best places for a walking safari – they were pioneered here, the wildlife is calm and the guides are experienced and knowledgeable. This morning, it’s your chance to head out on foot, gaining a completely different viewpoint on the park’s wildlife. Then, in the afternoon, you’ll take a final game drive through South Luangwa’s stunning landscapes.

Day Four: Towards the Falls

Today, you’ll leave South Luangwa, on a flight to Livingstone via Lusaka: Just 25 minutes from Livingstone airport in a hideaway location in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, you’ll find your home for the next three days – the magical Sussi and Chuma, run by renowned safari brand Sanctuary Retreats. Comprising of 12 treehouses set high in the ebony forest, connected by wooden walkways and perched on a breathtaking bend in the Zambezi river, the hotel is like no other accommodation we’ve come across. Check into your air-conditioned treehouse with its draped four-poster bed, dip in the hotel’s plunge pool overlooking the river and watch monkeys playing in the gardens, warthogs snuffling for food and the occasional visiting elephant. In addition to our planned activities, the hotel offers some tantalising optional extras. Book direct with the hotel to take a helicopter flight over the Falls, visit the World Heritage Site of Livingstone Island, tour the Zimbabwean side of the Falls, go White Water Rafting on the Zambezi rapids, or relax with spa treatments.

You’ll set out by foot with a National Parks Ranger on your own private walking safari, beginning at 6.30am to catch the animals and birds at their busiest and stopping for tea, coffee and snacks along the way. Elephant, buffalo, impala, hippo, crocodile, zebra and rare birds such as Peters Finfoot populate the park: see those that you don’t spot on foot during a private afternoon game drive in one of the hotel’s custom-built 4X4s.

Day Six: On the water

This morning, you’ll join some other hotel guests for a canoe along the Zambezi River, led by an experienced guide. Paddling for two hours from the hotel, you’ll experience the sleepy side of the river and savour the peace, as well as spotting birds and animals on the banks. Return to the hotel for lunch and to relax. This evening, you’ll take a sundowner cruise on the hotel’s custom-designed boat – but this is no ordinary cruise: you’ll whisk through Grade Two River Rapids, before beaching on the banks for a break and a well-deserved sunset cocktail.
