Your luxury adventure begins at Lake Manyara, one of Tanzania’s smaller and less well known parks. The diverse ecosystems of this pint-sized park support an astonishing wealth of wildlife, including huge herds of elephants and rare tree-climbing lions. Next you’ll head to the Serengeti, or Ndutu if you travel between December and April, for a two-night stay close to the migration route. The sight of thousands of stampeding animals is jaw-dropping, but so is the setting: the Serengeti was one of the world’s first UNESCO Heritage Sites, and its flamingo-filled lakes, shimmering orange sunsets and prowling big cats are the epitome of wild Africa.

You’ll combine a day tracking the migration with private game drives in search of wildlife including lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas, before moving onwards to the stunning surrounds of the Ngorongoro Crater. This lush, fertile landscape was created three million years ago by a volcanic eruption that tore the land apart, and it’s one of the very best places in Africa to see the Big Five. This is an unforgettable finale to your time in Tanzania, as you head out into the crater in search of rhinos, lions, cheetahs and hippos.

Day One: Arrival in Tanzania

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro airport, you’ll be met and transferred to Arusha, the lively town that’s the gateway to Tanzania’s top safari spots. The rest of the day is yours to relax: perhaps you’ll eat at one of its great restaurants, haggle for souvenirs among the Technicolour stalls of the Maasai Market, or simply take in the views of Mount Meru (the country’s second highest peak) rising above the town.

Overnight in Arusha

We only offer this private safari in Deluxe accommodation. Click hotel name below for more details.

Deluxe - Rivertrees Country Inn

Meals included: None

Day Two: Friendly Elephants and Tree-climbing Cats

It’s a quick private game drive from Arusha to one of Tanzania’s best game-viewing areas, the empty plains and busy waters of Lake Manyara National Park. Spend the afternoon on your first Tanzanian game drive here, seeking out 100 different bird species, as well as giraffe, impala, zebra, hippo and the park’s famous tree-climbing lions. Huge herds of elephant trundle past the vehicles, and there’s a hippo pool thronged with large, muddy residents. Spend the night in the national park, before moving onwards tomorrow.

Overnight in Lake Manyara National Park

Deluxe - Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

Meals included: Breakfast; lunch; dinner

Day Three: Make for the Migration

Make for your home for the next two nights: either the Serengeti, a protected area that’s home to the oldest ecosystem in the world or, if you travel between December and March, the sweeping grasslands of Ndutu, where the Serengeti meets the Ngorongoro Crater. Your base has been chosen as the very best place to see the wildebeest migration up close, but first you’ll set off on a private game drive across the sprawling flat landscape, seeking out lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena. Savour dinner and a night’s sleep under the huge, star-packed African sky.

Overnight in Serengeti National Park or Ndutu

Deluxe - Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge/Lake Masek Tented Lodge

Meals included: Breakfast; lunch; dinner

Day Four: On the Move

Today is devoted to private game drives geared to seeing the migration up close. Setting out from your camp, you have the choice of either one morning and one evening drive, or a full day with picnic lunch in order to maximise viewing time. Race through the countryside on the hunt for wildebeest and watch as they trail in a great mass on their migration. You’ll need plenty of space on your camera to capture this once in a lifetime sight.

Overnight at Serengeti National Park or Ndutu

Deluxe - Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge/Lake Masek Tented Lodge

Meals included: Breakfast; lunch; dinner

Day Five: On to Ngorongoro

Start your day early, on the hunt for big cats before they retreat from the blazing heat of the day. After your morning private game drive, you’ll leave the Serengeti or Ndutu, bound for the Ngorongoro Crater. Formed three million years ago by a volcanic explosion, its lush, fertile landscape is a haven for many types of wildlife – rhino, prides of lion and cheetah are regularly spotted. Settle in and enjoy dinner at your camp, situated right on the rim of the crater.

Overnight at Ngorongoro Crater

Deluxe - Serena Safari Lodge

Day Six: Into the Crater

Time to descend into the crater, to search out the lion, rhino, cheetah and many other wildlife species easily spotted within its walls. After a morning private game drive, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the hippo pond, where you can spot these gigantic animals as their heads bob above the water. Then you’ll begin the drive to back to Arusha, for your final night in Tanzania.
