Luangwa1

Less visited than its more touristy African neighbours, Zambia is a wildlife watchers’ paradise – with added epic scenery. Couple animal spotting with time in luxe treehouses near Victoria Falls for a truly unique holiday. We’ve chosen to start this Awesome Experience with three days in the untouched landscapes of South Luangwa National Park: lesser-visited than many of its African counterparts, it’s a true wilderness and a fantastic place to spot leopard, lion, elephant and myriad other species. Check in to perfectly-placed Mfuwe Lodge and enjoy game drives in your own private vehicle with private guide, as well as walking safaris, bird watching and visits to the local village. Your time in South Luangwa contrasts perfectly with a few days in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, home to the dramatic Victoria Falls or ‘Smoke That Thunders’. Here, with a romantic treehouse as your base, you’ll get up-close to the Falls, traverse the rapids of the mighty Zambezi river, visit a local village and school and cruise along the water for a cocktail overlooking one of the world’s most incredible sunsets.

Days One-Four: Into the wilderness

Upon arrival in Lusaka, you’ll transfer onto another plane to Mfuwe, gateway to the untouched landscapes of South Luangwa National Park. You’ll spend three nights in this incredible wilderness, home to 40 mammal species and more than 400 types of bird. Expect to see lions, leopards and elephants, as well as encountering smaller but no less impressive residents, including bush babies and mongoose.

Your base is Mfuwe Lodge, an award-winning hotel which avoids any pre-game drive traffic jams with a setting just inside the gates of the National Park . Eighteen spacious, air-conditioned chalets are spread across the banks of two lagoons busy with the local wildlife (including giraffe, hippo, antelope and crocodile). Visit in November, and you’ll also see elephants wandering through reception on their way to snack at a nearby mango tree. Between private safaris in your own private vehicle, take a dip in the pretty pool, burn off some of the excellent food in the outdoor gym, or indulge in some deep relaxation in the Bush Spa, set out onto the lagoon.

Two safari activities per day are included in the price of your trip:
Slap bang in the middle of the park’s best game-viewing area, the camp specialises in morning and night drives to see giraffe, buffalo, impala, elephant and zebra, plus lion, leopard, hyena, mongoose and bush babies. Walking safaris, bird watching and visits to local schools or villages can be booked with 24 hours notice.

Days Four - Seven: Tree house heaven

Today, you’ll leave South Luangwa, on a flight to Livingstone via Lusaka: Just 25 minutes from Livingstone airport in a hideaway location in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, you’ll find your home for the next three days – the magical Sussi and Chuma, run by renowned safari brand Sanctuary Retreats. Comprising of 12 treehouses set high in the ebony forest, connected by wooden walkways and perched on a breathtaking bend in the Zambezi river, the hotel is like no other accommodation we’ve come across. Check into your air-conditioned treehouse with its draped four-poster bed, dip in the hotel’s plunge pool overlooking the river and watch monkeys playing in the gardens, warthogs snuffling for food and the occasional visiting elephant. There is also a small spa and an excellent restaurant. During your all-inclusive stay, you can choose to partake in a variety of free activities run by the hotel’s excellent qualified guides.

Victoria Falls tour (Zambia side):
Situated in the same National Park as Zambia’s famous ‘Smoke That Thunders’, the lodge is perfectly placed to offer walking tours to one of the world’s most spectacular sights. After a short road transfer, you’ll begin your explorations with a guide. Watching the mile-wide Upper Falls tumble more than 300 feet into the Lower Falls is a truly exhilarating experience.

Game drives:
Head out with the lodge’s excellent guides, in search of wildlife in this quiet corner of the park from the comfort of your own private vehicle. As this area is relatively free of predators, you’ll catch sight of elephants, giraffe, zebra, crocodile, hippo, impala, monkeys – and perhaps the wild dogs that sometimes pass through.

Walking safaris:
Explore the area by foot, with a National Parks Ranger. Choose to set off in the early morning or as dusk begins, on a two-hour stroll that gets up-close-and-personal with the local wildlife. Tea, coffee and snacks are served on the morning walk. In the evening, guests enjoy sundowners and canapes.

Zambezi canoeing:
Paddles at the ready: it’s time for a two-hour excursion by kayak along the Zambezi river (for guests aged 15 plus).

Sundowner cruise:
Head out on a Zambezi Cruise in a specially-designed Sanctuary Retreats boat. You’ll tackle a series of exhilarating Grade II rapids, before mooring to enjoy sunset drinks and canapes. Then head back to the lodge for a warm shower and delicious dinner.

Tour the local school and village:
Take a tour around Nakatindi village with a local scout and guide – you’ll see the simple mud huts where villagers live and the community school, where 50 per cent of the children are orphaned or deemed vulnerable. Sanctuary Retreats prides itself on philanthropy and has been able to help Nakatindi with a number of projects.

In addition to these activities, the hotel offers some tantalising optional extras. Book direct with the hotel to take a helicopter flight over the Falls, visit the World Heritage Site of Livingstone Island, tour the Zimbabwean side of the Falls, go White Water Rafting on the Zambezi rapids, or relax with spa treatments.
