Day Two: Alpine towns
Have breakfast, then head out with your private guide to explore some of the region’s most beautiful towns. Known for its skiing and spas, Merano comes backed by mountains of up to 3,000m, with views over the dramatic landscapes of the Passeier and Vinschgau valleys. Surrounded by medieval castles, the town has attracted artists, scientists and writers since its foundation, including the late American poet Ezra Pound. Take in its landmarks before returning to Bolzano, where you’ll make for the Museum of Archaeology, which tells the story of Otzi the Iceman, a well preserved, 5,000-year-old early man, found by hikers on the Schnalstal/Val Senales Valley Glacier.

Day Three: Scenic highs
It’s time to get out further into the landscape today, as you hit the mountains with your private guide. Your first stop is breathtaking Carezza Lake, a brilliant green expanse fed by natural springs and backed by spruce forest. Then you’ll head higher still, to the Pordoi Pass (at 2,240m), for magnificent mountain views over the Marmolada range and the Sella Pass. On your way back to Bolzano, you’ll stop off in the village of Ortesei, known for its wood carvers who have passed down the trade from generation to generation. Wander its picturesque pedestrian area, where cafes and shops jostle for space on perfectly preserved streets.
