Summary

India

Our Taj , Tigers and Rishikesh holiday takes in some of the most varied and enchanting sights that the country has to offer. From Delhi’s captivating bustle to the serene Taj Mahal and the big cats of Ranthambore, it’s packed with once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Round off your trip with time in the spiritual town of Rishikesh. Set in the foothills of the Himalayas, it’s a magical place where temples and ashrams dot the banks of the Ganges.

What makes this experience awesome:

  • Personal guides, private transfers and private game drives included
  • Ride through bustling streets by rickshaw on a culinary trip of Old Delhi
  • Explore the Taj Mahal by the light of an Indian sunrise
  • Drive in your own exclusive private vehicle and with an expert naturalist, searching for tigers on a two-day game drive in Ranthambore National Park
  • Wander the intricately decorated tombs and monuments of UNESCO-listed Qutab Minar
  • Learn to cook like a local preparing an Indian dinner with a local family
  • Relax in Rishikesh with the stunning Himalayas as a backdrop

India has the second largest population in the world – which accounts for the fascinating buzz of its big cities. On this adventure you’ll start in Delhi, witnessing the sprawl of this bustling metropolis from the back of a rickshaw whilst revelling in the incredible food that the city has to offer. You will meet local chefs, bakers and families to get a real insider’s experience of the Delhi culinary scene and the people who make it so special.

Your next few days will be spent exploring two world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the remarkable Taj Mahal, one of the new seven wonders of the world, and its lesser known but no less breathtaking sister Agra Fort - both palaces of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Then it’s time to explore the country’s calmer side in the lush countryside of the Ranthambore National Park, an old hunting ground that’s now a haven for wildlife. See Bengal tigers in their natural jungle habitat on a private safari with your own expert naturalist, alongside other creatures including leopards, monkeys and wild boar.

Round off your trip with time in relaxed Rishikesh, set in the foothills of the sacred Himalayas. The Beatles came here in the 60's to learn meditative practice – writing many songs at the Maharishi Mahesh ashram – and it has been a hub for spiritual seekers ever since. Our hotels have been chosen for their proximity to nature – either next to the Ganges or lost in the foothills – and are excellent places to find calm after a busy week of sightseeing. All offer yoga and meditation, but we’ve left this part of the trip free of organised activities, meaning you can be as relaxed or as active as you want to be.

Rishikesh

The Himalayas need no introduction; they're as famous as they are infamous and are home to many of the world's highest peaks. For millennia they have been the subject of myths and legends, attracting the attention of mountaineers from all over the world. Rishikesh, a town in the Himalayan foothills, is known as a centre of yoga and meditation, with temples and ashrams dotted along the sacred Ganges River. The Beatles came here in the 60's to learn meditative practice – writing many songs at the Maharishi Mahesh ashram – and it has been a hub for spiritual seekers ever since. On this 3 day relaxation extension you'll be nestled right in between the formidable Ganges and the jaw-dropping Himalayas of Northern India, in hotels chosen specifically for recharging after a busy week in the buzzing Indian cities.

We provide a hotels in a stunning location with breakfast included and private transport from Delhi directly to your hotel and back. The perfect way to rest and recuperate before you head back home, this 4 day trip has no organised activities, meaning that your time can be as relaxed or as active as you want it to be.

Day One: Welcome to India

Arrive at Delhi International Airport to a traditional greeting of marigold garlands, followed by a private transfer to your hotel. After check-in, your private trip through Delhi starts at the President's House. You'll travel by tuk-tuk down the grand boulevard of Rajpath (King’s Way) to the imposing India Gate, before heading to frenetic Connaught Place. Here, washermen (dhobi walas) soak hotel sheets, restaurant tablecloths and myriad clothing in the old-fashioned outdoor laundries tucked between the monuments. Have a drink at the perfectly-preserved, turn-of-the-century United Coffee House; or visit the Gandhi Smriti museum, where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last days of his life. Come evening, it’s time for a culinary trip by tuk-tuk, tasting some of the city’s best street food and heading behind the scenes to meet some of the chefs, bakers and families who have been providing fabulous food here for generations.

You’ll be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the station for the 8:00am Gatimaan Express train, scheduled to arrive in Agra at 9:30am. Then it’s time to explore this buzzy city of monuments and markets, once the capital of the grand Mughal Empire. Make for its second most famous UNESCO World Heritage site first – Agra Fort. Built as a military defence in the 16th-century, this imposing, red-brick building was converted into a palace by Shah Jaden a century later. Marvel at its marble stonework and countless courtyards, then drive through the city, past bustling bazaars and through tuk-tuk traffic jams, to Itimad-ud-Daulah, the tomb of a Persian nobleman that’s nicknamed the Baby Taj. Enjoy a free evening, before tomorrow’s early start.

Day Three: Marvel at the Taj Mahal

You’ll rise before dawn to visit the Taj Mahal in the glorious Indian sunrise, when its marble exterior is at its most beautiful, reflecting the rose and golden tints of the sky. A monument to love built more than 350 years ago, the Taj was commissioned by Shah Jahan to commemorate his third wife, who died in childbirth. It took 20,000 craftsmen more than 18 years to complete. Return to the hotel for breakfast and check-out. On the way, visit Fatehpur Sikri, the ghost-town capital of the Mughal dynasty, abandoned only a few years after it was built: the haunting 'ruins' are still in perfect condition. The rest of the day will be spent travelling to Ranthambore: you’ll arrive at your hotel in time for dinner.

Days Four & Five: Tiger Time

Spend two days wildlife-spotting in Ranthambore National Park, once the hunting grounds of the Maharajah of Jaipur. Wake early both mornings, for game drives in your own exclusive private vehicle in search of the park’s animals with an expert naturalist guide – it’s the best time to spot the region’s famed diurnal tigers, as well as leopards, jackals, sloth bears, samba deer and mongoose. Return to the hotel by 10.00am for breakfast and time to relax, before a longer afternoon drive through the wilderness. You’ll pass through rugged terrain, with rocky ridges, hills and open valleys dotted with lakes and pools.

Day Six: Inside the Imperial City

New Delhi was designed by the British in the 1920s, but the history and buildings of Old Delhi go back much further, as you’ll discover at the 16th -century tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayan, a UNESCO World Heritage site set in grand, ornamental gardens. You’ll then visit the 12th-century red sandstone minaret of Qutab Minar, still the world’s tallest brick minaret and a popular site with locals and visitors alike. Finally, after a day pounding the sites, feast on a delicious dinner at the home of a local family, who will show you how to recreate a Indian feast on your return home.
