Iceland1

Iceland’s Golden Circle has everything a nature-lover could want – waterfalls, glaciers, geysers, lagoons and so much more. On this adventure, you’ll see its unmissable highlights from a specially-modified 4X4 Arctic Truck as you tackle the roads on a day of self-drive adventure alongside your private guide. Arctic Trucks are unique 4WD vehicles designed for mountain roads, ice and other tough environments, so you’ll access areas rarely seen by tourists as you motor right to the real heart of Iceland. Before that, there’s time to get acquainted with the quirky city of Reykjavik and spend an evening on a private safari in search of the Northern Lights. And the excitement doesn’t stop after your day at the wheel, either: on day three, you’ll head out into icy waters by boat, searching out whales, orcas, dolphins and porpoises in the atmospheric light of the low-lying winter sun. Finish your trip with premium access to the soothing but surreal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon, for a pampering morning involving treatment masks, sparkling wine and reminiscing on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Day One: Arrive in Iceland

You’ll arrive in Reykjavik airport in Iceland by lunchtime, giving yourself time to explore the city at your leisure. Why not wander the pretty harbourside, or check out Hallgrímskirkja – the tallest church in the country – designed to reflect the mountains and glaciers of the Icelandic landscape. Grab an early dinner in town, because you’ll be picked up at 8pm for your private Northern Lights tour. Your guide will drive you to an isolated area outside Reykjavik, free from light pollution and tour buses. You’ll make a few different stops for the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis dance through the sky, before returning to your hotel around 1am. (If you’re unsuccessful in seeing the Northern Lights, you’ll have another chance on the evening of Day 3).

Overnight in Reykjavik

We offer a variety of hotel classes to suit different budgets. You can choose the style that’s right for you.

Day Two: Golden Circle with a twist

After breakfast, you’ll be picked up by your guide for an adventure to Iceland’s greatest sights. Today you’ll sit behind the wheel of a powerful Arctic Truck on a privately-guided self-drive tour (if you don’t fancy driving or want to take a look at the scenery, your guide will be more than happy to drive for you). First, you’ll visit Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO Heritage Site that was home of the Icelandic Viking Government from 930 AD to 1798. You’ll follow a mountain road with views over lava fields and Iceland’s second biggest glacier – Langjökull – before stopping off to watch the Strokkur Geyser magnificently spout boiling water to a height of 35 metres. Next, you’ll head up to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall with its multi-step cascade. Depending on weather conditions, your guide will take you on some off road tracks so you can really appreciate the power of the Arctic Truck as you tackle some detours on the way to your next destination, Langjökull glacier. We can arrange an optional snowmobiling tour and ice caving experience here as well (see the Extras tab for details). Back in Reykjavik by late afternoon, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy dinner at one of the city’s great restaurants.

Day Three: Whale watching and Icelandic history

Today you’ll make your way to Reykjavik’s old marina (location weather dependent) for some whale watching. This unique trip varies in flavour from the low-lying sun of the winter which casts a warm glow over the water and snow-capped mountains, to the bright high sun of the summer months. Iceland’s waters harbour tasty prey for Humpback Whales, Orcas, White-Beaked Dolphins and Harbour Porpoises, all of which you might spot on this adventure. After breaking for lunch, you’ll take an afternoon city tour with an English-speaking Icelandic local. There’s so much to learn about this fascinating country; your guide will teach you about history of Iceland, the evolution of Reykjavik and the Vikings, as well as telling you some folklore about Iceland’s most well-loved creatures: elves. This evening, there’ll be another chance to see the Northern Lights if you missed them on your first night. If you were lucky enough to spot them on first go, enjoy a free evening to take in some more of Reykjavik.
