Today you’ll make the two-hour trip to the tiny, sub-tropical town of Mindo, situated 1,250m above sea level behind the mountain chain of the Pinchincha Volcano. This is the place for an adventure high in the forest canopy, as you zipline between the trees and mountains of the Mindo Valley. (The bravest can even try an  zipwire, with feet in the air.) Along the way, your guides will point out the forest’s flora and fauna. Afterwards, you’ll tube along the sleepy river, spotting animals and birds en route during an unforgettable day of adventure. In the quaint town itself, you will have the opportunity to meader the handicraft market with their hand woven crafts. The perfect souvenir from this central american gem. Onwards to Cuicocha. At the base of the Cotacachi Volcano is a crater lake, 3,000m in diameter, there are optional hike around the lake of varying lengths to appreciate the beauty of each angle. Visit them along with your private guide, then take a nature walk to search out the local flowers and animals, and enjoy a meal made from the local speciality – steamed trout. As part of the day’s activities, there’s the chance to soak in one of the area’s lovely hotel pools which are fed by the warm thermal waters and surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Afterwards, you’ll be driven back to Quito for your final night in the city.

Accommodation is on an all-inclusive basis, so you’ll have nothing more to worry about than seeing the wildlife. Day Six: Isabela Island

Afterwards, walk the trails of the Wetlands Complex, spotting lava lizards, flamingos and giant tortoises as well as visiting the turtle breeding centre.

Day Seven: Volcanos and lagoons

Continuing your explorations of Isabela Island, your first stop for the day is Moreno Point, for incredible views over a huge lava field and the distant Cero Azul volcano. The tidal pools and mangroves that pepper the landscape here throw up excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. Next, you’ll make for the tranquil lagoon of Elizabeth Bay on the western coast of Isabela, where outsized mangrove trees soar to the sky, sea turtles, sea lions and rays swim in the calm waters, and pelicans dive from above.

Day Eight: Rugged coast and remote wildlife

Expect a wildlife-packed day as you visit Urbina Bay and Tagus Cove on Isabela Island. Wander rugged paths towards windswept beaches and barren cliffs, spotting brightly-coloured fish, flightless cormorants, penguins, boobies, seals, pelicans and hundreds of crabs en route.

Day Nine: Lava fields and underwater worlds

It’s time to visit a new island: Fernandina, which is the most pristine in the Galapagos. No introduced species exist on this 300,000 year old island, and an absence of soil means that only cacti and mangrove can survive in terms of fauna. See thousands of marine iguanas and flightless cormorant, before heading back to Isabela Island and Punta Vicente Roca, one of the best places in the Galapagos for snorkelling. Look out for sea horses, bat fish and puffer fish.

Day Ten: A world in colour

Make for the highly volcanic Santiago Island this morning. Heading to the black sand of Puerto Egas, you’ll seek out sea lions and flamingos and scan tidal pools for turtles and rays. Afterwards, make for the densely red beaches of Rábida Island, a rocky speck which is among the best places to get close to pelicans and see a variety of land birds. You can swim and snorkel among turtles and rays offshore.

Day Eleven: Hats and high points

The islet of Sombrero Chino (Chinese Hat), today’s first port of call, is so-named due to its distinctive shape. Looking like a volcanic hat rising from the water, it’s home to a windy walking trail peppered with lava lizards, lava cactus and American Oystercatcher birds. Meanwhile, in the waters below, reef sharks and rare Galapagos penguin lurk. Take in the dramatic view from the top of the trail before making for your next stop –breathtaking Bartholomew Island. Among the most scenically beautiful of the islands, this one comes with incredible views across the water towards Pinnacle Rock, a renowned Galapagos landmark.

Day Twelve : Goodbye Galapagos

There’s time for one more stop before you bid the Galapagos goodbye. En route to the airport, you’ll stop at bijou North Seymour, an uninhabited island where marine birds come on fishing expeditions. Here, you’ll see frigate birds and blue-footed boobies, and perhaps catch a glimpse of the Galapagos, reef and tiger sharks that swim offshore. Afterwards, it’s time to transfer back to Baltra ready for your return flight to Quito.
