Family Victoria Falls Adventure - Victoria Falls, Elephant Rides, Helicopter Flight and Authentic Tribal Experience

Zambia, Africa

Wider than Niagara and taller than Iguazu, the Victoria Falls have all the drama and impact of their much-visited counterparts– but considerably less crowds. The best place to see them from is Zambia, where safety, a jetlag free time zone and one of the continent’s warmest welcomes combine to make the perfect place to bring the kids. We’ve designed this trip especially for families, adding helicopter and elephant rides and authentic tribal visits to give them an introduction to Africa that they’ll never forget.

What makes this experience awesome:

  • Private holiday with personal guides and private transport included
  • Cruise the Zambezi at sunset as you watch animals on its banks
  • Take an elephant-back trip through the wilderness
  • Helicopter over Victoria Falls on a heart-in-mouth adventure
  • Spend the day in a local village with the indigenous Leya people
  • Get the best views of the Falls on an adventure with your private guide

Touch down in Zambia and begin your adventure immediately, cruising the Zambezi as animals throng on the riverbanks for a dusk drink. The following day, you’ll traverse the wilderness by a very special mode of transport – elephant. Afterwards, explore the Victoria Falls and get the ultimate holiday snap with your private guide. On Day Three, you’ll get to know the local people on a visit to the nearby village of Mukuni to taste traditional food, meet the residents and see inside their huts, before losing yourself amid the fascinating exhibits of Zambia’s largest museum. End your trip on a high – with a helicopter ride over the Falls.

Itinerary

Zambia

Day One: Straight to the Lodge

Welcome to Zambia. It’s an easy transfer to your lodge for the night – around 20 minutes by private car. Depending on your category of accommodation, you’ll spend the next four nights at:

  • Avani Victoria Falls Hotel, which we’ve chosen because of its family-friendly credentials and its location just five minutes’ walk from Victoria Falls. Colourful rooms come with African textiles and there are five dining options - including sundown dinners in a private bird hide.
  • Victoria Falls Waterfront Lodge, set in jungly gardens that are just waiting to be explored. Accommodation is in thatched cottages which have the feel of treehouses, and there are two pools and a restaurant with lovely views over the river.

You’ll have time to check-in and refresh, then you’ll enjoy a cruise along the Zambezi river as the sun sets and the animals come to the water for their last drink of the day. As the sky darkens from rose to deep purple, watch silhouetted birds flit across it and hear the soothing sound of the water below. You’ll then return to your chosen lodge for the night.

Day Two: Ride and Falls

Get set for an elephantine adventure: after breakfast, you’ll head off to meet a herd of pachyderms before climbing on top of one for a morning elephant ride into the wilderness. Afterwards, it’s time to visit the majestic Victoria Falls with a private guide. Named as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and called ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ in the local language, Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall in the world and a sight of epic proportions.

Day Three: Village life

To the east of the Falls, Mukuni Village is home to the Leya people who live a traditional, tribal life. After breakfast, you’ll have the opportunity to spend the day with them, learning more about their way of life by visiting their huts, seeing craftsmen and women at work, and tasting traditional meals. Afterwards you’ll make for Zambia’s best museum, The Livingstone Museum, which is packed with tribal artefacts, taxidermy and a life-sized model of an African Village.

Day Four: High time

It’s your last full day at the lodge and you’ll end on a high, on an incredible trip above the falls – by helicopter. There is no better way to grasp the scale of the falls than soaring above them, taking in the Zambezi River and huge gorges that lead up to them as you cut through watery mist.
