Scattered with ramparts, fortresses and Baroque palaces, Malta makes for an enticing short break destination. On this trip, you’ll explore its attractions alongside those of its sleepy little sister island, Gozo. After a day’s relaxing in the lively seaside region of Qawra, you’ll take the ferry to Gozo for a tuk tuk tour that takes in vineyards, art classes and a farmhouse restaurant situated in untouched countryside. Back on the mainland, you’ll explore the sights and tastes of Valletta, Malta’s tiny but incredible capital founded by the Knights of St John in the 1500s. Your final full day is another feast for the senses, as you head to a cookery school to learn secret family recipes passed down through the generations, and recreated using homegrown produce from the family farm.

    Day One: Welcome to Malta

Day Two: Tuk Tuk Adventure in Gozo

After breakfast take a car to Cirkewwa in the north of the island, ready for the ferry ride to sleepy Gozo. The best way to tackle the island is by tuk-tuk – reaching parts that other vehicles can’t – so we’ve arranged a special tour on three-wheels with a local guide. You’ll stop off at the renowned Tal-Massar Winery for a wine-tasting in beautiful countryside, served up with authentic snacks such as hobzbiz-sejt (bread with tomato paste and olive oil), galletti (maltese water biscuits) and maltese sausage. After this, you’ll be pedalled to the acclaimed restaurant of Ta Frenc, situated in an old farmhouse surrounded by palms. Enjoy a gourmet meal, then it's off to a painting class using pigments made from native herbs. Later, you’ll return to Malta by ferry and be transferred back to your hotel.

    Day Three: Tasting Valletta

Today you will travel to Valletta, Malta’s incredible UNESCO-listed medieval capital. Take a private walking tour with your guide, starting at Upper Barrakka Gardens (once the private exercise grounds of the Knights of St John). These colonnaded gardens have the best views over the harbour and the famous saluting battery (a battery of cannons that still fires daily salutes). Enjoy your surroundings with local soft drinks and pastizzi (savoury pastries), before continuing on with your exploration. Along the way, you’ll stop for a tasting of Cisk, the local beer, and for lunch at Rampila. Situated in the historic city ramparts, its cave dining room and pretty terrace are the perfect places to absorb Valletta’s history over an excellent meal. Suitably refreshed, you’ll continue the ornate St John Co-Cathedral, known as the crown jewel of Valletta and home to Caravaggio’s Beheading of St John. Finish your day by exploring Casa Rocca Piccola, a 16th-century palace that’s still an antiques-laden family home, complete with World War II air raid shelters.

Day Four: Aprons at the Ready

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the little village of Dingli, in the north of the island, for a cookery class on the rambling, rural Diar Il-Bniet estate. Alongside a restaurant famed for its rural Maltese food, the estate has a farmhouse kitchen cookery school, dedicated to secret recipes passed down by the owners’ grandmother. Using homegrown produce straight from the farm, you’ll cook a seasonal, three-course menu, finding out family stories and local traditions as you go. Savour the results with a glass of wine, and take home an apron and recipes so you can recreate the culinary magic at home.  The rest of the afternoon is free to relax.
