Day Two: Yerevan and beyond
One of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities with centuries of fascinating history, the lively Armenian capital begs to be explored. After breakfast, you’ll meet your private guide to tackle its highlights and secret corners – from the geometric parks of the Cascade Stairs to grand Republic Square. Afterwards, take a 40-minute drive into the Kotayk province, a vast sprawl of ancient monuments, arid plains and snowy mountains. Here, you’ll visit the medieval Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO Heritage site of church and rock tombs hidden in the mountains, as well as the Temple of Garni, the only pagan temple left in the region, built in 77AD. As a spine-tingling optional extra, we can arrange tickets for a short concert of medieval Armenian music in the Geghard Monastery – a hauntingly beautiful experience that we thoroughly recommend (for related costs, see the Extras Tab). You’ll also explore the stunning natural beauty of the area, scattered with deep gorges, canyons and caves that once served as shelter for hermits. Stop off at viewpoints near the Azat River to admire incredible views, then venture off-road to discover the “Symphony of stones”, 50m-high basalt columns that cling to rock faces and are thought to have been formed during the cooling of volcanic lava. Finish your day with a tasting of homemade local vodkas and lavash (Armenian bread), accompanied by an evocative recital of traditional musical on the Armenian Duduk (a mesmerising kind of flute).

Day Three: Lake country
After breakfast, make the journey to Lake Sevan. Known as the blue-eyed pearl and 1,900m above sea level, this Alpine expanse is the second largest freshwater lake in the world. Cruise its waters, passing wild-flower packed hills, market-backed beaches and little resort towns, then continue to Dilijan, a resort town known as ‘Little Switzerland’ thanks to its abundant greenery. Enjoy lunch here before heading to peaceful Lake Parz, where you can enjoy birdsong and fresh air before zip-lining along an 800m-long wire, 300 metres above the breathtaking Khachagh Byur Gorge. Afterwards, you’ll spend the night in Dilijan.

Day Four: Wine and dine
Take breakfast at the hotel before heading to Armenia’s third largest city, Vanadzor, once home to several Soviet chemical plants. From here, you’ll continue on to the vineyards of the Armas winery, set in some of Armenia’s most beautiful countryside. Founded in 2007, when Armenak Aslanian returned to his home country to continue the family tradition of wine-making, the winery has won awards for its rosés and semi-sweet and dry white wines, which you’ll get to taste alongside a gourmet lunch, after a tour of the vineyards. After your return to Yerevan, your evening is free to explore the city: Yerevan is small and walkable, and evening promenades are a tradition. Take to the wide, tree-lined streets to search out terrace restaurants and lounges or do a spot of shopping.
