Day One: Arrive in Iceland
You’ll arrive in Reykjavik airport in Iceland by lunchtime, giving yourself time to explore the city at your leisure. Why not wander the pretty harbourside, or check out Hallgrímskirkja – the tallest church in the country – designed to reflect the mountains and glaciers of the Icelandic landscape. Grab an early dinner in town, because you’ll be picked up at 8pm for your private Northern Lights tour. Your guide will drive you to an isolated area outside Reykjavik, free from light pollution and tour buses. You’ll make a few different stops for the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis dance through the sky, before returning to your hotel around 1am. (If you’re unsuccessful in seeing the Northern Lights, you’ll have another chance on the evening of Day 3).

Day Two: Golden Circle with a twist
After breakfast, you’ll be picked up by your guide for an adventure to Iceland’s greatest sights. Today you’ll sit behind the wheel of a powerful Arctic Truck on a privately-guided self-drive tour (if you don’t fancy driving or want to take a look at the scenery, your guide will be more than happy to drive for you). First, you’ll visit Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO Heritage Site that was home of the Icelandic Viking Government from 930 AD to 1798. You’ll follow a mountain road with views over lava fields and Iceland’s second biggest glacier – Langjökull – before stopping off to watch the Strokkur Geyser magnificently spout boiling water to a height of 35 metres. Next, you’ll head up to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall with its multi-step cascade.

Day Three: Whale watching and Icelandic history
Today you’ll make your way to Reykjavik’s old marina (location weather dependent) for some whale watching. This unique trip varies in flavour from the low-lying sun of the winter which casts a warm glow over the water and snow-capped mountains, to the bright high sun of the summer months. Iceland’s waters harbour tasty prey for Humpback Whales, Orcas, White-Beaked Dolphins and Harbour Porpoises, all of which you might spot on this adventure. After breaking for lunch, you’ll take an afternoon city tour with an English-speaking Icelandic local. There’s so much to learn about this fascinating country; your guide will teach you about history of Iceland, the evolution of Reykjavik and the Vikings, as well as telling you some folklore about Iceland’s most well-loved creatures: elves. This evening, there’ll be another chance to see the Northern Lights if you missed them on your first night. If you were lucky enough to spot them on first go, enjoy a free evening to take in some more of Reykjavik.
