Diwali Summary

This trip traces the Golden Triangle between three of India’s most captivating cities - Delhi, Agra and Jaipur - with a side trip to the pilgrimage city of Pushkar. Starting in the sprawl of Delhi’s markets, you’ll immerse yourself in India from the get-go. Zipping around by tuk tuk and rickshaw you’ll sample Delhi’s tastiest street food, before taking the train to Agra, where you’ll visit the Taj Mahal for a spine-tingling sunrise. Next you’ll move on to Jaipur just in time for the Diwali celebrations to begin.

During the Festival of Light, you’ll be welcomed in by a local family for a unique insight into this special celebration. You’ll see the streets beautifully illuminated as millions of oil lamps (known as diyas) are scattered around homes and temples to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness and of good over evil. After you’ve recovered from your night of festivities, its time to head further into Rajasthan to visit lively Pushkar and beautiful Udaipur, where you’ll round off your Indian adventure with a magical boat trip on Lake Pichola.

Itinerary

India

Day One: Welcome to India

Arrive at Delhi International Airport to a traditional greeting of marigold garlands, followed by a private transfer to your hotel. After check-in, your guide will meet you at 2pm to explore the city on a private tour, starting at the President's House. You'll travel by tuk-tuk down the grand boulevard of Rajpath (‘King’s Way’), before wandering frenetic Connaught Place. Here, washermen (dhobi walas) soak hotel sheets, restaurant tablecloths and myriad clothing in the old-fashioned outdoor laundries tucked between the buildings. Have a drink at the perfectly-preserved, turn-of-the-century United Coffee House; or make a quick visit to the Gandhi Smriti museum, where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last days of his life. At 4pm, it’s time for a culinary tour by rickshaw, tasting some of the city’s best street food and heading behind the scenes to meet the chefs, bakers and families who have been providing fabulous food here for generations.

Day Two: Enchanting Agra

After an early breakfast, you’ll be picked up from your hotel at 6:45am and transferred to the station for the 8am Gatimaan Express train, scheduled to arrive in Agra at 9:30am. In the afternoon, you’ll explore this buzzy city of monuments and markets, once the capital of the Mughal Empire. Make for the UNESCO World Heritage listed Agra Fort first. Originally built as a military defence in the 16th-century, this imposing, red-brick building was converted into a palace by Shah Jaden a century later. Marvel at the marble stonework and countless courtyards, then drive through the city, past bustling bazaars and through tuk-tuk traffic jams, to Itimad-ud-Daulah, an ancient tomb that’s often called the Baby Taj. Enjoy a free evening, before tomorrow’s early start.

Day Three: Marvel at the Taj Mahal

You’ll rise before dawn to visit the Taj Mahal in the glorious Indian sunrise, when its marble exterior is at its most beautiful as it reflects the rose and golden tints of the sky. A monument to love built more than 350 years ago, the Taj was commissioned by Shah Jahan to commemorate his third wife, who died in childbirth. It took 20,000 craftsmen more than 18 years to complete. Return to the hotel for breakfast and check-out at 8am. You’ll be travelling 150 miles west to Jaipur. On the way, visit Fatehpur Sikri, the ghost-town capital of the Mughal dynasty, which was abandoned only a few years after it was built: the haunting 'ruins' are still in a pristine condition. You’ll arrive at your hotel in the early evening.

Day Four: Divine Diwali in the Pink City

Today’s highlight will be celebrating Diwali like a local. But first, get to know this terracotta-built Pink City, starting with a guided wander through its buzzing bazaars. Then you’ll travel by Jeep to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Amber Fort, before driving on to Hawa Mahal (the Palace of Winds). In the afternoon, visit Jaipur’s star attraction: the City Palace and its accompanying museum, which contains a compelling collection of Rajasthani and Mughal art. Opposite is another UNESCO site to visit: the Janta Manta, an observatory that’s home to a fascinating collection of astronomical instruments. Head back to your hotel with plenty of time to dress in traditional kurta pyjamas (provided on request) before your Diwali celebrations begin at 6pm at the house of a local family. The festivities start with a welcome to all the guests from the family and an exchange of gifts (you can bring a box of sweets for them if you wish). You’ll then join a traditional Diwali, starting with puja prayers and the lighting of the lamps, before continuing with a celebratory dinner.

Along the way, your guide will introduce you to local people and their customs and traditions, providing a real insight into daily life in the city. After this, you’ll take part in an exclusive workshop in the art of Jal Sanjhi (water painting). Enjoy a demonstration of this 200-year-old craft, before having a go yourself. Visit the ornate Jagdish Temple and the serene Garden of the Maidens, which was a popular venue for royal parties in the 18th Century.
