Day Two: City to sea
Get to know Jordan’s charming capital on a morning’s exploration with your private guide. There’s a huge amount to see here, from the Roman citadel and theatre to St Georges Church, home to the oldest map of Palestine in the world which takes the form of a Byzantine mosaic. Afterwards, you’ll be driven to Mount Nebo, the dramatic ridge that was mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses saw the Promised Land. Enjoy incredible views over lunch in a restaurant on the mountain. Next, you’ll take a private transfer to Wadi Mujib Chalet Hotel, set in the Mujib Biosphere Reserve, the lowest nature reserve on Earth on the banks of the Dead Sea. These simple chalets have hypnotic views over the tranquil water and are the perfect place to share an incredible sunset. Guided hikes, zip-lining and rock climbing can be arranged by the hotel for a surcharge. Finish your day with a traditional dinner cooked over an open fire.

Day Three: Hikes and healing mud
Start your day with a hike at the Wadi Mujib Canyon, where hidden gorges, silent pools and waterfall slides combine on the thrilling Siq Trail. Trek through miniature rapids and slide down rock faces on this three-hour trip: depending on rainfall, you may even find pools deep enough to swim in en route. Afterwards, you’ll take a private transfer to the Dead Sea for some well-earned relaxation. Float in its surreally salty waters or slather yourself in its health-giving mud, before enjoying dinner at your hotel.

Day Four: Desert delights
Bid the Dead Sea goodbye as you transfer to the breathtaking mountains of Dana Biosphere Reserve set along the Great Rift Valley. Home to 449 species of animals and birds – from kestrels to chameleons – the reserve is home to vast, empty landscapes that beg to be explored. You’ll be checking in at Feynan Eco Lodge, lost at the end of a rugged track deep in the reserve. Lauded by the press as one of the world’s best eco-lodges, the resort comes with candlelit courtyards, comfy rooms and excellent vegetarian cuisine. During your overnight stay, you can choose one complimentary optional activity from those on offer in the resort: you might like to help light the hundreds of candles which illuminate the lodge by night; stargaze from a roof terrace mattress as bedouin guides help you navigate the skies and spot Saturn and Jupiter with a powerful telescope; or join one of the lodge’s guides for a sunset stroll to the top of a gentle outcrop for knock-out views of a spectacular sunset. Take it all in with a mint tea in the cool breeze, as life continues busily in the Bedouin camps below. You can also book a cycling excursion at minimal costs (see Extras tab for more information).

Day Five: Cave dwelling
Spend the morning with the Bedouin, finding out more about their lives as you learn cooking skills and how to apply khol make-up, before joining a shepherd to milk a goat. After lunch, you’ll journey onwards to Petra for a night in extra-special accommodation – one of Little Petra’s caves, carved thousands of years ago as dwellings. You might like to join an optional Petra By Night experience in the evening, wandering the incredible rock city by candlelight for an unforgettably magical introduction to this UNESCO World Heritage Site (for more information see the Extras tab). Afterwards, settle down for a night sleeping as the Bedouin once did. Dinner, drinks, blankets and mattresses are provided, and your guide will remain with you for your memorable stay.

Day Six : Incredible Petra
After your first glimpse of Petra yesterday, it’s time to properly explore one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. After breakfast, your private guide will take you to the ‘back door’ of Petra, allowing you to see the city in the reverse direction to most other visitors. Hike the back door route to the Monastery, one of Petra’s largest carved facades, then take in incredible views and the fascinating but rarely visited snake tomb, before passing the Colonnaded Street, Theatre and Street of Facades. You’ll finish up at the Treasury, the most iconic and photographed monument in the complex. In the evening, you’ll have the privilege of joining a local Bedouin family for dinner in Amarin Village in Little Petra, as they share their songs and stories with you.

Day Seven: Towards Wadi Rum
Bid Petra goodbye: you’re bound for the red desert of Wadi Rum, where Lawrence of Arabia was famously filmed. Start your exploration of its undulating sands with a camel trek from Wadi Rum Village to Lawrence’s Spring, the head out on a Jeep excursion to explore the area’s dunes and natural bridges, stopping for lunch along the way. Later, you’ll make for the desert’s highest accessible point to watch the sun tumble into the sand during a spectacular sunset, before stargazing underneath its unpolluted skies. Return to your camp for dinner and performances from an Oud player and a storyteller.
