This is the best place to see the Northern Lights

You can head off to many destinations in search of the Northern Lights – but, in most, you could end up disappointed. I’ve taken a New Year trip to Iceland before, only to find that the phenomenon was nowhere to be seen* People heading to Svalbard can also find themselves unlucky.

That’s why our purpose-built Northern Lights trips are set in Swedish Lapland, in an area that’s inside the Arctic Circle, relatively dry and cloudless and as light-sure as you can get (though, of course, nothing is ever completely guaranteed). Our four night break includes one evening at Aurora Sky Station. Set on Mount Nuolja, 900 metres above sea level in the heart of Abisko National Park, this mountain is high above any light pollution, enabling you to don special cosy suits and boots and enjoy uninterrupted views of the lights from its outdoor terrace and observation deck.

You’ll also try to glimpse the lights in a more romantic way, traversing frozen lakes and rivers by dog sled on an unforgettably magical experience. The aurora borealis aren’t the only thing going for Lapland’s magical winter landscape though: we’ve also included a snowmobile tour punctuated with coffee by a roaring bonfire, and time in a renowned spa for the perfect snowy escape. * Despite this, Iceland remains one of my favourite destinations for outdoorsy escapes, and you can often see the Northern Lights there too, see our itineraries here.
