Morocco's other souk

The shopping is Marrakech’s medina might be the most famous on earth. Where else can you find such gorgeous rugs, hand-tooled handbags and heady spices? Well, in Fes actually. In this city’s labyrinthine alleys, you’ll find less tourists, lower prices and locals doing their everyday shopping. That’s why, on our Morocco’s Cultural Contrasts tour, we’ve dedicated plenty of time to exploring its twisting maze of streets (as well as Marrakech, the Sahara and Ait Benhaddou). Prepare for sensory overload: baskets of slithering snails, towering piles of rugs, squawking chickens and stacks of rainbow-hued pottery. We wanted to show our guests the real workings of the Medina too, so we’ve set up meetings with artisans (including bakers, chandelier-makers and Mr Ouazzani, who’s brocade features on Yves Saint Laurent garments), as well as a tea ceremony in a private house. It’s one of our most memorable Moroccan experiences, and you’re sure to find a souvenir or two along the way.
