Flash Dance

Oh, Vienna! Europe’s most under-rated city is the best place to have a ball: a historic Viennese one, that is. The city is famous for its grand Balls, which centre around posh frocks, sparkling decorations and plenty of waltzing, and we’ve secured hard-to-get tickets to the action for our Waltz At A Viennese Ball experiences. This is no ordinary party. Viennese Balls open with an opulent ceremony and there’s strict etiquette in place (only men can ask women to dance, and slower couples dance nearer the centre of the floor). But before you can show off your moves, you might need a bit of instruction – which is why our trips include a two hour lesson with the prestigious Elmayer Dance School. Known for leading many of the ball opening ceremonies, and even for having its own ball (the Elmayer-Kranzchen), the school has passed down through three generations of the same family and is now run by Professor Elmayer – who happens to have written five books on etiquette and is a certified Austrian dance teacher. The version of Viennese Waltz they will teach you takes no more than an hour to learn, so in the remaining hour you can try the basics of a couple of other dances too!
