Around Vienna

Grand Vienna is the perfect city for a celebration. Set the scene for an exclusive Viennese Ball.

1. Grand Designs

You have to see the Hofburg Palace, the sprawling collection of rooms that houses the famous Spanish Riding School, apartments of the Hapsburg Empire, numerous museums and a tropical butterfly house. After exploring, settle in for a long lunch in the grand surrounds of the Palm House, a glass domed, turn-of-the-century wonder decorated in outsized greenery.

2. Hot Stuff

Ease muscle ache and get your skin glowing at Aux Gazelles, a chic take on the Turkish hammam that’s right at the heart of the city. Celebrating its twentieth year in 2017, it’s a classic city secret. Baths are divided into male and female sections, and treatments follow the steam and scrub Morrocan tradition. There’s also a cosy, chic restaurant that does great tagines as well as cookery lessons. Or, for a newer and more luxe take on the hammam, book into Aisawan Boutique Spa, a just-opened sanctuary in the city centre.

3. Take Me To The River

In summer, the banks of the Danube turn into laid-back river beaches complete with bars and restaurants. Visit from May to September, and you have to spend the afternoon at one of them (mostly accessible on the U-Bahn). Strandbad Gansehaufel is the best known, complete with waterpark and sandy beaches, but the stretch at An der Oberen Altau Donen is also worth a visit: with a particularly magic atmosphere, it’s known for its sunset swimming and low-key parties.

4. Meat Feast

You can’t go to Vienna and not try its most famous dish – wurst. The city is dotted with würstelstandes – kiosks selling sausages in buns – and eating one is a Viennese tradition. The stands are no nonsense, often without seating, and serve up many versions of the delicacies – from cheese-stuffed ones to the super spicy. Head to Albertinaplatz 1010 for one of the most popular, or make for KaiserZeit for a gourmet take on the city’s classic dish.
