Around Rio

It’s one of our favourite cities and worth independent exploring. See for yourself on our Argentina, Brazil and Iguazu Falls trip.

1. Face Time

The neighbourhood of Leblon is where Rio’s beautiful people hang out, and it comes filled with chic restaurants, hip bars and cool boutiques. You’ll probably have to queue for a table at Sushi Leblon (and you’ll need to dress to impress), but the cocktails and sashimi are well worth the effort. For drinks, live music and a Rio-party atmosphere, we love Botequim Bate-Papo (which means Chatter Tavern in English).

2. Water World

Our experience includes time on some lesser-visited beaches and – if that gives you a taste for white sands and swooping palms – there are plenty more to seek out. Make for surfy, laid-back Praia do Joatinga, in a hideaway cove down a long, winding path. Or head west to Grumari, an uninhabited area of Rio known for its five incredible beaches backed by forested hills.

3. Park Life

There’s no better place to escape the heat than in the 137 acres of the Botanical Gardens, with its orchid house, lake and graceful palm-lined promenade. If you’ve already immersed yourself in the chaos and nightlife of the city, this sprawling park should offer some respite: Monkeys and toucans wander wild in the park; you can follow an art trail past incredible sculptures; and you can eat a delicious breakfast at French café, La Bicyclette.

4. Have A Ball

Nowhere is more famous for the Beautiful Game than Rio, and watching a match here is an unforgettable experience. Head to the Maracana stadium to see three of the biggest teams play (Fluminense, Flamego and Botafago): avoid the touts and buy tickets on the day at the stadium – and avoid trouble by leaving quickly after the game’s finished. The season runs every month except December.
