Around Mexico City

Free time in Mexico’s vibrant capital before our Day of Dead Adventure

1. The city’s exciting dining scene fuses trad recipes with contemporary flourishes and the menu at acclaimed Los Girasoles uses pre-Hispanic ingredients such as dried worms and crunchy grasshoppers while also serving up less challenging Mexican cuisine (garlic prawns and tacos for example). Ants eggs with green chilli sauce are much tastier than they sound! This grand old place at the heart of the zocalo and a short walk from the Palacio Bellas Artes also feels like the perfect place for a celebration. (James Bond fans note: the façade also featured in Spectre.)

2. Market-hopping here isn’t all about souvenirs or fruit and veg. Embrace the city’s sophisticated side with a trip to hip food hall Mercado Roma, where you can munch on vegan tacos, head to a gluten-free bakery or play table football in the beer garden. The retro-inspired interior is packed with novel stalls selling excellent ice cream, churros and tacos and the atmosphere is unique in Mexico City.

3. You can’t visit this city without noticing the colourful, folklore-influenced art that’s… well, everywhere. See an incredible selection at the Museo de Arte Popular where the folk art on show includes everything from Day of the Dead sculptures to papier maché monsters and regional costumes. Then shop for high-quality souvenirs in the brilliant onsite shop.

4. Mooch the vast city centre park of Chapultepec (the largest in the city), with its lake and old imperial palace. Go on Sunday to hang on with the locals, who throng here to picnic by the lake and lounge in its hammocks. You’ll experience regular life in the city as you wander around, but there’s plenty to see here too: Giant Pandas live at the park zoo; there’s an amusement park full of rides; and four museums are onsite.
