Around Beijing

Let this chaotic capital seduce you before you Walk the Great Wall of China on our unique experience. Here are our top alternative things to do…

1. Go dumpling crazy. The city is scattered with places serving up this northern Chinese delicacy – from street stalls to gourmet restaurants. Cheap, cheerful and renowned as one of the best, Mr. Shi’s is a great place for a quick intro into the city’s doughy delicacies. Run by the formidable man himself, it’s a lively place that serves more than 30 different varieties. Or go full tourist at the Grand Hyatt in Tiananmen Square, where Made in China’s dedicated dumpling chef regularly scoops awards for his fantastic creations. It’s the perfect pre-Great Wall feast.

2. Hit the stores in the streets of Nan Luo Gu Xiang and Liulichang for superior shopping. These narrow alleys date back more than 700 years, with exquisite shop fronts and shady trees. But while the former is a hipster hotbed of cool restaurants and chic boutiques (best visited on a week day to avoid the hordes), Liulichang is a more traditional affair, packed with paint supply stores, artisan stalls and a gigantic bookshop.

3. Get a birds eye view of this mega-city with an evening drink at Atmosphere, Beijing’s highest bar. Situated a dizzying 80 floors up the China World Summit building, it has vistas over the rooftops of the Forbidden City alongside skyscrapers and traffic-packed streets. For vertigo sufferers, there’s soothing live music and excellent cocktails.

4. Embrace mall culture: but don’t expect to only find stores in Beijing’s well-loved shopping centres. Scattered among the designer labels of Parkview Green (including Stella McCartney and Van Cleef & Arpels) is the biggest collection of works by Salvador Dali outside Barcelona, and there’s a huge exhibition hall displaying respected works by Chinese artists too.
