Around Angkor

Siem Reap, the satellite town by the incredible ruins at Siem Reap, is an exciting destination in itself. Expect a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere and colourful streets packed with restaurants, coffee shops and spas in our Cambodia trip.

1. Pay a visit to the FCC (Foreign Correspondents’ Club), the former mansion of the French Governor and now a chic hotel and restaurant. This bar and restaurant’s been going since Cambodia was all but closed to tourists, when it catered to the intrepid few. Now, temple-hoppers crowd the bar come evening, for cocktails and well-rendered Cambodian dishes, such as papaya salad and fish amok (with lemongrass and lime leaves in a banana leaf bowl).

2. Go feet first. The lively lanes of the city are packed with spas offering fish pedicures: for less than £5, you can stick your tootsies into a tank of fish and let them nibble off the dead skin until your heels are baby soft. A trip to one of these spas is almost a rite of passage for visitors – but beware! Ticklish people may find this excruciating.

3. Peace out. The town’s Peace Café may serve up veggie breakfasts, burgers and pasta but it’s also a thriving community centre. Visit for excellent yoga and talks by local monks on the subject of Buddhism. On weekend mornings, the café offers free Khmer lessons so you can converse with the locals in their own language. There’s also a daily vegetarian cooking class.

4. You’ll find everything from fried tarantulas to 3D movies on the 200 plus stalls of Cambodia’s first ever night market. Angkor Night Market carries on into the early hours, with the Island Bar at its centre providing drinks and snacks as fuel. The site is currently being renovated, but it hasn’t affected the lively atmosphere.
